Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative

The Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a Heritage Lottery (HLF) and Southwark Council funded regeneration project from Our Hut.

Regenerating Peckham

The project aims to contribute to the regeneration of Peckham. HLF and Southwark Council are part-funding the restoration and repairs to some of Peckham town centre’s oldest and finest buildings and raising knowledge of and participation in local heritage.

As well as providing grants to building owners for repairs and restoration, the scheme includes a programme of complementary community initiatives.

Working with local schools

Children work on architectural designs

Our Hut has designed a programme of creative heritage workshops to help local primary schools engage with the fascinating and rich architectural history of Peckham.

We delivered the workshops at John Donne Primary School (Year 4) and St James the Great RC Primary School (Year 2).

Education resources – Key Stage 1 and 2

Online resources for Key Stage 1 and 2

Following the workshops, we created an online resource to enable other schools in the area to carry out a similar project. The scheme of work is most suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2.

Comments from schools

Denis O’Regan, Headteacher at St James the Great RC Primary School was very enthusiastic about the project:

Many thanks for all your work. It was a real pleasure for me to see the great work that you did with the children and to see their understanding of where they live develop in such a rich way.

The teachers were also very positive:

Project based approach was great – it was cross-curricular and the children were able to learn across a range of subjects. As a whole the project was very well organised. Designing and creating the kiosk worked amazingly.

The children learnt more about their local community and that residents can and should engage with what goes on in their community. Children also learnt about Peckham’s history and the importance of looking after the historical buildings. They learnt to work collaboratively and to share ideas.

As were the children:

I liked it when we went to Peckham and looked at improving the buildings. I also loved making our own buildings.

Our architecture education projects

Our Hut has carried out projects on a wide variety of architectural themes, working mainly in schools, but also with community groups, families and the general public.
